North Klang Straits Bypass
The North Klang Straits Bypass, designated as Federal Route 20 and part of the Asian Highway Network as route AH 141, serves as a critical highway bypass connecting to Port Klang in Klang, Selangor, Malaysia. This infrastructure was developed in response to increasing traffic congestion and the strategic need to enhance connectivity to one of Malaysia's busiest ports.
The inception of the bypass dates back to the late 1970s, a period marked by rapid economic growth and infrastructural development in Malaysia. Construction of the bypass commenced in 1983 and reached completion by 1 January 1985. Initially, the highway was privatized and maintained by Lebuhraya Shapadu Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Shapadu Corporation Sdn Bhd, along with the Malaysian Public Works Department.
By the late 1990s and into the 2000s, the original bypass became heavily congested. This congestion led to the construction of the New North Klang Straits Bypass, also referred to as the Grand Sepadu/Shapadu Highway (E30/AH141). This new route was designed to provide an alternative to the accident-prone areas of the original bypass.
In 2009, a significant development occurred when the Port Klang toll plaza was decommissioned, rendering sections from Jalan Kapar to Port Klang toll-free. In 2014, the expressway management was transitioned to the LGB Group, leading to a rebranding as Grand Sepadu Sdn Bhd.
The North Klang Straits Bypass, encompassing a total length of approximately 17.5 km (10.9 mi), is built to meet the JKR R5 road standard, with a prescribed speed limit of 90 km/h. Despite these standards, the bypass lacks dedicated motorcycle lanes, which has raised safety concerns. The route is notorious for frequent accidents, particularly involving heavy vehicles, a situation exacerbated near certain high-traffic zones like schools.
The bypass is integral to the region's transport network, interfacing with several major expressways, including the New Klang Valley Expressway, South Klang Valley Expressway, and the West Coast Expressway. These connections aid in managing traffic flow and facilitating trade and commute in the Klang Valley and beyond.
