New South Wales (NSW) is a prominent state located on the eastern seaboard of Australia. It shares its borders with Queensland to the north, Victoria to the south, and South Australia to the west. To the east, it is bordered by the Coral and Tasman Seas. The state also completely surrounds the Australian Capital Territory and the Jervis Bay Territory.
History
Colonial Foundation
The history of New South Wales dates back to its establishment as a British penal colony in 1788. The colony was initially founded at Sydney Cove by Captain Arthur Phillip, who led the First Fleet. Originally, the colony of New South Wales included more than half of the Australian mainland. Its western boundary was defined at the 129th meridian east in 1825. In its early days, the colony also encompassed the island territories of Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania), Lord Howe Island, and Norfolk Island.
Development and Changes
During the 19th century, New South Wales underwent significant territorial adjustments. Large portions of its area were progressively separated to form new colonies, which later became the various states and territories of modern Australia.
