National Merit Scholarship Program
The National Merit Scholarship Program is a prestigious academic competition in the United States that offers recognition and university scholarships to high-achieving high school students. It is administered by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a privately funded nonprofit organization. The program's goal is to identify and honor students with exceptional academic talent and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
Eligibility and Selection Process
The journey through the National Merit Scholarship Program begins with the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). This is a standardized test co-sponsored by the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, typically taken by high school juniors. The PSAT/NMSQT serves as the initial screening for entrants to the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Each year, approximately 1.5 million students enter the competition by taking the PSAT/NMSQT. Based on the test scores, students are designated as Commended Students or Semifinalists. Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships but are recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Semifinalists represent the highest-scoring entrants in each state and are eligible to advance in the competition.
Becoming a Finalist
To become a Finalist, Semifinalists must submit a comprehensive scholarship application, which includes academic records, extracurricular accomplishments, leadership roles, and an endorsement by a high school official. Additionally, they must have a consistently high academic performance throughout high school. Approximately 15,000 Semifinalists advance to Finalist standing.
Scholarships and Awards
Finalists are considered for three types of National Merit Scholarships:

National Merit $2500 Scholarships: These are single-payment scholarships awarded to Finalists based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments.

Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards: These scholarships are provided by about 220 corporations, company foundations, and other business organizations. They are granted to children of employees or to students pursuing college majors or careers the sponsor wishes to encourage.

College-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards: Many colleges offer scholarships to Finalists who are admitted to their institution. These awards provide financial support to help defray the costs of higher education.
