National Institute For Occupational Safety And Health United States
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is a pivotal agency under the United States Department of Health and Human Services responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related injuries, illnesses, and deaths. Established by the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, NIOSH operates in conjunction with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which is tasked with setting and enforcing workplace safety standards.
NIOSH was created as part of the wider legislative framework introduced by the Occupational Safety and Health Act to ensure safe and healthful working conditions for every working man and woman in the nation. While OSHA is responsible for enforcement of safety regulations, NIOSH provides the research necessary to support OSHA's regulatory mission. This division of responsibilities was designed to create a comprehensive approach to workplace safety and health.
The mission of NIOSH is to generate new knowledge and to transfer that knowledge into practice for the advancement of occupational safety and health. It conducts scientific research, develops guidance and recommendations, disseminates information, and responds to requests for workplace health hazard evaluations.
NIOSH's activities include:
NIOSH is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and has facilities in multiple locations around the United States, including Cincinnati, Ohio, Morgantown, West Virginia, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It collaborates with various partners including federal, state, and local governments, industry, labor, academic institutions, and other organizations to advance workplace safety.
NIOSH’s research and recommendations have been instrumental in improving workplace safety standards not just in the United States but also internationally. It collaborates with organizations like the World Health Organization and the International Labour Organization to promote global occupational health standards.
