Nat Friedman
Nathaniel Dourif Friedman (born August 6, 1977) is a prominent American technology executive and investor. He has played pivotal roles in the tech industry, most notably as the chief executive officer (CEO) of GitHub and as the chairman of the GNOME Foundation.
Nat Friedman was born in the United States, where he developed an early interest in computing and technology. His academic pursuits led him to gain deep insights into the workings of software development and open-source communities.
In 1999, Friedman co-founded Ximian alongside Miguel de Icaza, a company focused on developing Unix applications based on the GNOME platform. Ximian made significant contributions to the open-source community and was acquired by Novell in 2003. Friedman also served as the chairman of the GNOME Foundation, helping steer the direction of GNOME projects.
Nat Friedman took on the role of CEO at GitHub, a platform for software development and version control using Git. During his tenure, he introduced innovative products such as GitHub Copilot, a tool that assists developers by providing code suggestions, and GitHub Codespaces, which allows developers to start coding immediately without local setup. Other notable contributions include the development of a native GitHub mobile app for iOS and Android, GitHub Advanced Security to enhance code security, and GitHub Sponsors, a program to financially support open-source developers. Friedman stepped down as CEO of GitHub in November 2021.
Nat Friedman has been involved with several venture capital projects. He founded NFDG, a venture capital firm investing in innovative companies, and has been associated with investments in companies like ElevenLabs, co-led by Andreessen Horowitz and entrepreneur Daniel Gross. In 2023, Friedman created nat.dev, a web interface for popular large language models.
Friedman currently serves as the head of product at Meta Superintelligence Labs, furthering advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities.
