Montauk Branch
The Montauk Branch is a significant rail line operated by the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in the state of New York. This branch runs the entire length of Long Island, stretching from Jamaica Station in Queens, New York to the easternmost terminus at Montauk Station in Montauk, New York.
The Montauk Branch extends east of Babylon, New York for about 75 miles, reaching from Bay Shore, New York to Montauk. This segment is characterized by a non-electrified track, initially a double-track until Sayville, New York, after which it becomes a single track leading to Montauk. Currently, there are 16 active passenger stations along this stretch, although historically, there were 32, along with a signal tower.
The Montauk Branch holds a wealth of historical significance. Notably, the Westhampton Station was saved from destruction during the 1995 Long Island wildfires due to the efforts of valiant firefighters. The branch has also been managed by notable figures such as David D. Morrison, a retired LIRR Branch Line Manager who oversaw numerous stations including those on the Montauk Branch.
During the summer months, the Montauk Branch experiences a substantial increase in ridership. This is largely due to vacationers traveling to the eastern end of Long Island to enjoy the resorts, quaint shops, and beautiful beaches in the region. The Hamptons, a popular summer destination, is directly served by this branch, making it a critical link for both residents and tourists.
The Montauk Branch is sometimes confused with the Babylon Branch, which refers to the service running on the same rail lines east of Jamaica to Montauk. Other branches of the LIRR, such as the Port Jefferson Branch and the Oyster Bay Branch, are important parts of the network managed alongside the Montauk Branch.
The Montauk Branch remains a vital part of the Long Island Rail Road, offering essential services for both daily commuters and seasonal travelers. Its historical and operational significance continues to impact the transit landscape of Long Island and beyond.
