Ministry Of Education Malaysia
The Ministry of Education (Malay: Kementerian Pendidikan; Jawi: كمنترين ڤنديديقن) is a vital wing of the Government of Malaysia responsible for overseeing the country's education system. It is tasked with managing several critical aspects of education, including compulsory education, pre-tertiary education, technical and vocational education and training (TVET), curriculum standards, textbooks, standardized testing, language policy, and more.
Originally, the ministry was known as Kementerian Pendidikan and was responsible for all education-related affairs in Malaysia. However, in 2004, the ministry's name was changed to Kementerian Pelajaran, focusing on education from pre-school to the secondary level. The responsibility for tertiary education was transferred to a newly formed entity, the Ministry of Higher Education. In May 2013, under the leadership of then-Prime Minister Najib Razak, these two ministries were merged to reinstate a single Ministry of Education.
The Ministry is responsible for administering key legislative acts and developing policies that shape Malaysia’s educational landscape. Some of the significant policies include:
The Ministry is led by the Minister of Education, with Fadhlina Sidek currently holding the position since December 3, 2022. The Director General of Education, a key figure within the ministry, oversees the implementation of educational policies and initiatives.
A significant part of the Ministry’s role involves managing language policies, including the teaching and integration of languages such as Malaysian Mandarin. This is crucial given Malaysia's diverse ethnic landscape, including the Malaysian Chinese population.
The education system under the Ministry includes a range of institutions from comprehensive schools to selective schools. It also encompasses programs aimed at standardizing educational content and improving educational outcomes across the nation.
