Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of Indonesia

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Indonesian: Kementerian Pendidikan, Kebudayaan, Riset, dan Teknologi), abbreviated as Kemendikbudristek, is a prominent government ministry within the Republic of Indonesia. This entity oversees educational, cultural, research, and technological sectors across the nation.

Establishment and Evolution

On 30 March 2021, President Joko Widodo initiated a significant reshuffle of the Indonesian cabinet. The Presidential Letter submitted to the People's Representative Council proposed merging the former Ministry of Research and Technology with the Ministry of Education and Culture. This merger resulted in the current form of the ministry, tasked with a broader mandate.

Consequent to this reorganization, the National Research and Innovation Agency (Indonesian: Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional, abbreviated as BRIN) was established as a separate, non-ministerial entity, allowing the ministry to focus on its core areas without the direct responsibility for national research and innovation.

Leadership

Nadiem Makarim was appointed as the first Minister of the newly-formed ministry, under the Presidential Decision No. 72/P/2021. His leadership marked the beginning of a new era focused on integrating educational and cultural policies with technological advancements and research initiatives.

Structure and Function

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology functions through a detailed organizational structure designed to manage its diverse responsibilities. It is distinct due to its unique 'shadow organization' outside its official structure, which plays a significant role in shaping ministry policies and outputs. This shadow organization, disclosed in September 2022, has been pivotal in providing external insights and inputs that guide the ministry's strategic direction.

Responsibilities

The ministry is charged with:

  • Formulating national policies in education and cultural sectors.
  • Promoting technological research and integration in educational practices.
  • Overseeing cultural preservation and development in Indonesia.
  • Coordinating with BRIN for research initiatives and technological innovation.
