Ministry Of Education And Culture Indonesia
The Ministry of Education and Culture in Indonesia, known in Indonesian as Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan (abbreviated as Kemendikbud), was a vital government ministry responsible for overseeing the education system and cultural affairs in the country. The ministry's responsibilities spanned early childhood education, elementary education, secondary education, community education, and the management of cultural activities and heritage.
The Ministry of Education and Culture was established to manage and develop the educational framework and cultural heritage of Indonesia. Over time, the ministry has undergone several transformations to align with the evolving educational and cultural needs of the nation.
On 9 April 2021, a significant restructuring occurred when the People's Representative Council approved the merging of this ministry with the Ministry of Research and Technology. This merger led to the formation of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology. Concurrently, the National Research and Innovation Agency was established as a separate non-ministerial government body.
The 2021 reshuffle was unprecedented in the history of Indonesia's government restructuring. It not only reshuffled the ministers but also disbanded existing ministry institutions mid-term, a move that was unusual for the country. Nadiem Makarim, a prominent figure and former CEO of Gojek, was appointed as the first holder of the newly formed Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology.
This reshuffle was announced by Ali Mochtar Ngabalin, spokesperson and expert professional of the Deputy IV (Information and Political Communication) at the Executive Office of the President of the Republic of Indonesia.
The ministry played a crucial role in shaping the educational policies and cultural initiatives in Indonesia. It was responsible for formulating educational standards, curriculums, and promoting cultural preservation and innovation. The integration of research and technology further enhanced its scope, allowing for a more comprehensive approach to modernizing education and preserving cultural heritage.
