Middle Atlas
The Middle Atlas is a prominent mountain range located in Morocco, part of the larger Atlas Mountains system. This mountain range, known in the Amazigh language as ⴰⵟⵍⴰⵚ ⴰⵏⴰⵎⵎⴰⵙ (Atlas Anammas) and in Arabic as الأطلس المتوسط (al-Aṭlas al-Mutawassiṭ), is a significant geographical feature of the country. It plays a crucial role in both the ecological and cultural landscapes of North Africa.
The Middle Atlas is situated in the central part of Morocco, forming the westernmost end of a large plateaued basin that extends towards Algeria. This range is a part of the broader Atlas Mountains, which are notable for separating the Sahara Desert from the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The Middle Atlas is flanked by the High Atlas to the south and the Rif Mountains to the north, with the latter separated by the Sebou River.
The Middle Atlas is characterized by a diverse range of flora and fauna. The region is home to the Barbary macaque, also known as the Barbary ape, which is a species of primate native to the region. The forests of the Middle Atlas predominantly consist of Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica), which is a significant tree species in this ecosystem.
The climate is varied across the range, with its higher elevations experiencing snowfall during the winter months, while the lower regions have a milder climate. This diversity in climate and elevation supports a wide variety of plant and animal life, contributing to the environmental importance of the Middle Atlas.
The inhabitants of the Middle Atlas are primarily from the Berber ethnic group, specifically the Central Atlas Tamazight speakers. The Berber culture is rich and diverse, with a history that intertwines with the natural landscape of the region. The language, customs, and traditions of the Berber people are integral to the identity of the Middle Atlas.
The basin of the Sebou River, which is fed by the waters of the Middle Atlas, is a crucial agricultural area for Morocco. It serves as the primary transportation route linking the Atlantic and Mediterranean regions of the country. The fertile lands of this basin are vital for the agricultural output of Morocco, making the Middle Atlas a key contributor to the country's economy.
