The Mediterranean woodlands and forests span across several areas, predominantly located in the coastal plains, lowlands, and mid-elevations of northern Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and an isolated region on the Cyrenaic Peninsula of Libya known as Jabel al Akdar. Additionally, the Spanish territories of Ceuta and Melilla are encompassed within this ecoregion.
Flora and Fauna
One of the flagship species of this ecoregion is the Sandarac tree, which is native to this biome. The region is also a hotspot for floral endemism, housing ancient sandarac forests, pine-covered mountainsides, and seasonal wetlands rich in waders. These ecosystems support a diverse array of wildlife, including species such as the endangered Barbary macaque, aoudad, caracal, common genet, Eurasian otter, and golden jackal.
