Martin de Porres, born on December 9, 1579, in Lima, Viceroyalty of Peru, part of the Spanish Empire, is a revered figure in the Catholic Church. He was the illegitimate son of Don Juan de Porras y de la Peña, a Spanish nobleman, and Ana Velázquez, a freed slave of African and Native descent. Martin had a sister, Juana de Porres, who was born in 1581.
