The Marche Region of Italy
The Marche region, often referred to in English as the Marches, is one of the twenty regions of Italy. Located centrally within the country, Marche is characterized by a diverse landscape that encompasses both hills and coastal areas along the Adriatic Sea. The region boasts a population of nearly 1.5 million people, making it the thirteenth most populous region in Italy. Its capital and largest city is Ancona.
Geography
Marche is bordered by several other Italian regions and territories. To the north, it is bounded by Emilia-Romagna and the small independent republic of San Marino. Tuscany and Umbria lie to the west, while Lazio is to the southwest. The region's southern boundary is shared with Abruzzo, while to the east lies the Adriatic Sea. The inland areas are notably mountainous, which historically limited travel and interaction with other regions.

Throughout history, the cities of Marche have been significant centers of culture, art, and commerce, particularly during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Notable cities include Pesaro, Urbino, Camerino, and Ascoli Piceno. Urbino is especially renowned for its Palazzo Ducale and as the birthplace of the famed painter Raphael.

The economy of Marche is diverse, with significant contributions from both industry and agriculture. The region is well-known for its production of Verdicchio wine, a white wine grape variety that thrives in the region's hilly terrain. Additionally, Marche's manufacturing sector is robust, with a focus on furniture, domestic appliances, and textiles.

Ancona is home to the Marche Airport, also known as Ancona-Falconara Airport, which serves as a key transport hub for both domestic and international travel. The region's transportation infrastructure supports its role as a significant commercial and tourist destination.
