Maharashtra Political Crisis 2022
The 2022 Maharashtra political crisis was a significant event in the Indian state of Maharashtra, beginning on June 21, 2022. The crisis unfolded when Eknath Shinde, a member of the Shiv Sena, led a faction of party Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to break away, challenging the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray.
Maharashtra, one of India's most politically significant states, witnessed a precarious alliance known as the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). This coalition was formed in 2019 between the Shiv Sena, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and the Indian National Congress to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from returning to power. The coalition was seen as an ideological mismatch, with parties from different ends of the political spectrum joining forces primarily to govern Maharashtra.
The catalyst for the crisis was Eknath Shinde's dissent against the coalition government. Shinde, who was a senior leader within the Shiv Sena, argued that the MVA was not serving the interests of the party's traditional voter base, which favored an alliance with the BJP. On June 21, 2022, Shinde, along with a significant number of Shiv Sena MLAs, moved to Surat, and later to Goa, as a strategic move to shield themselves from the party leadership's influence.
Shinde's faction eventually secured the support of two-thirds of Shiv Sena MLAs, which under Indian anti-defection laws, allowed them to claim legitimacy without disqualification. This maneuver was pivotal in the political dynamics of the crisis.
The instability led to the resignation of Uddhav Thackeray as Chief Minister, collapsing the MVA government. Subsequently, Eknath Shinde was sworn in as the Chief Minister with the support of the BJP, and Devendra Fadnavis of the BJP became the Deputy Chief Minister. This marked a significant realignment in Maharashtra's political landscape, reinstating the BJP's influence in the state.
The crisis underscored the fragile nature of coalition governments, especially those formed on the basis of political expediency rather than ideological alignment. It also highlighted the Shiv Sena's internal divisions and raised questions about the party's future trajectory.
In the aftermath, the crisis extended into legal battles. The actions of then Maharashtra governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari and the assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar during the crisis were challenged in court. On May 11, 2023, the Supreme Court of India gave a judgment terming some of these actions as illegal, adding another layer of complexity to the crisis.
