Maha Vikas Aghadi
The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) is a political alliance formed in the Indian state of Maharashtra comprising primarily of centre to centre-left political parties. The coalition was established in the wake of the 2019 Maharashtra political crisis, following a fallout between the Shiv Sena and its long-time ally, the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The alliance was officially formed after the 2019 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election, when the Shiv Sena, led by Uddhav Thackeray, broke away from the National Democratic Alliance due to disagreements over the chief ministerial candidate and other key portfolios. This led to the creation of the Maha Vikas Aghadi, comprising the Shiv Sena, the Indian National Congress, and the Nationalist Congress Party, among others.
The MVA played a significant role in Maharashtra's politics by forming the state government after its inception. Uddhav Thackeray became the Chief Minister, leading the coalition. However, the alliance faced challenges, notably from within, as Eknath Shinde, a senior Shiv Sena leader, attempted to realign with the Bharatiya Janata Party, which led to political turmoil. This internal dissent ultimately resulted in Thackeray resigning before a no-confidence motion could be passed.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Maha Vikas Aghadi secured 30 out of 48 seats in Maharashtra, demonstrating its political presence. However, the alliance faced a setback in the subsequent 2024 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election, where it won a record low of 50 seats, including two from the Samajwadi Party, which later exited the coalition.
Prominent leaders associated with the MVA include Uddhav Thackeray of Shiv Sena, Sharad Pawar of the Nationalist Congress Party, and notable Congress leaders. Thackeray, in particular, has remained a central figure, maintaining his influence in Maharashtra politics despite the fluctuating fortunes of the alliance.
