The Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI), formerly known as the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence (SIAI), is a non-profit organization dedicated to studying and advancing the field of artificial intelligence. Founding and History
MIRI was founded in 2000 by Eliezer Yudkowsky, a well-known researcher in the field of artificial intelligence and existential risks, with funding from Brian and Sabine Atkins. Initially established as the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence, the organization aimed to accelerate the development of AI technologies while ensuring the creation of Friendly Artificial Intelligence (FAI).
In December 2012, the institute underwent a significant transformation. It sold its original name, web domain, and the Singularity Summit to Singularity University. Subsequently, in January 2013, the institute adopted the name Machine Intelligence Research Institute.
