Macau Light Rapid Transit

The Macau Light Rapid Transit (MLRT), also known as the Metro Ligeiro de Macau, is an automated guideway transit system situated in the Macao Special Administrative Region of China. This innovative urban transit solution features rubber-tired vehicles and is designed to improve connectivity across major areas within Macau, including the Macao Peninsula and Taipa Island.

Taipa Line

The Taipa Line is the first operational line of the Macau Light Rapid Transit, inaugurated on December 10, 2019. This line provides essential transit services to key locations in Taipa, including the Venetian Macau and Galaxy Macau. It connects several strategically important stations such as the Airport Station and the Stadium Station, adjacent to the Olympic Sports Center.

East Line

The East Line is currently under construction and is a significant expansion of the MLRT. Spanning approximately 7.7 kilometers, this line is fully underground and will connect the Macao Peninsula with the New Town Zone A, New Town Zone E, and Taipa Island. Upon completion, the East Line will enhance the coverage and passenger capacity of the MLRT network, thereby alleviating road traffic and promoting sustainable urban development.

Hengqin Line

The Hengqin Line is a new addition to the MLRT system, planned to open in December 2024. It serves as a shuttle line between the existing Lotus Station on the Taipa Line and the Hengqin Port area. The terminus for this line is the Hengqin Station, which is positioned to facilitate cross-border travel between Macau and the nearby Hengqin Island.

Key Stations

  1. Airport Station: Strategically located to provide easy access to the Macau International Airport.

  2. Stadium Station: Situated near the Olympic Sports Center, it serves sports enthusiasts and event-goers.

  3. Ocean Station: Adjacent to the Ocean Gardens, a large-scale residential and commercial complex in Taipa.

  4. Pai Kok Station: Located near major attractions like the Venetian Macau and Cotai Strip.

Future Developments

The Macau Light Rapid Transit is continuously evolving to meet the growing demands of Macau’s urban landscape. With ongoing projects like the East Line and the Hengqin Line, the MLRT is poised to become an integral component of Macau's public transportation network, improving accessibility and reducing urban congestion.
