Luisito Rey
Luisito Rey, born Luis Gallego Sánchez on June 28, 1945, was a Spanish singer-songwriter and music executive, best known as the father of the internationally acclaimed singer Luis Miguel. Rey's life and career, though marked by contributions to the music industry, are often overshadowed by his controversial personal life and his complex relationship with his son.
Luisito Rey was born into a family with strong artistic roots in Cádiz, Spain. His father, Rafael Gallego Rey, was initially a flamenco singer before transitioning to a career as an electrician. His mother, Matilde Sánchez Repiso, was a singer and dancer. Luisito had two siblings: Vicente, nicknamed Tito, and Mario.
His stage name, Luisito Rey, was derived by combining his diminutive first name, "Luisito," with "Rey," a nod to his father's maternal surname. Initially, he experimented with the name Luisito Gasán, combining the first syllables of his parents' last names, before settling on the more familiar moniker.
Luisito Rey pursued a career in music, gaining some recognition as a singer-songwriter. His work included managing his son's early music career and producing several songs and albums. Despite his talents, Rey's career as a manager and artist was often criticized for his authoritarian methods and personal issues, including allegations of abuse and manipulation.
Rey's reputation was further complicated by the testimony of many acquaintances and family members, who described him as a manipulative figure. His godfather, the renowned Puerto Rican psychologist Alfred D. Herger, publicly labeled him as a psychopath and abuser. These revelations were largely brought to public attention through interviews and the Netflix series "Luis Miguel: The Series", which portrayed the complex and often tumultuous relationship between Luis Miguel and his father.
Rey married Marcela Basteri, an Italian actress, and together they had three children, including their eldest son, Luis Miguel. His marriage was fraught with challenges, and Basteri's mysterious disappearance in the mid-1980s added to the family's turbulent narrative. The full details surrounding her disappearance remain a topic of speculation and intrigue.
Despite his contributions to the music industry, Luisito Rey's legacy is largely defined by his personal controversies and his relationship with his son, Luis Miguel, who went on to achieve immense success as a singer. Rey passed away on December 9, 1992, but his life continues to be a subject of interest, particularly in relation to the career and life of his famous son.
