Luciano Gaucci
Luciano Gaucci (December 28, 1938 – February 1, 2020) was a memorable figure in the world of Italian sports and entrepreneurship. Known for his flamboyant personality and a penchant for bold business moves, Gaucci was an influential football club owner and a significant player in the horse racing industry.
Football Ventures
Gaucci is perhaps best known for his ownership and presidency of the Italian football club AC Perugia Calcio. Under his leadership, the team achieved notable successes, including appearances in the UEFA Cup. However, his tenure was also marked by controversy, most notably during the 2002 FIFA World Cup incident involving Ahn Jung-hwan. After Ahn scored a decisive goal against Italy, eliminating them from the tournament, Gaucci publicly terminated Ahn's contract with Perugia, citing the goal as the reason.
In addition to AC Perugia, Gaucci also owned AS Sambenedettese and was involved with AS Roma, although his relationship with the latter was tumultuous, as evidenced by his departure from the club in a fit of rage.
Horse Racing
Aside from football, Gaucci made significant strides in the Thoroughbred horse racing industry through his Allevamento White Star operation. One of the jewels in his racing portfolio was Tony Bin, a European Champion thoroughbred who won prestigious races such as the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Other notable horses included Sikeston and Dr Devious, the latter of whom won the 1992 Epsom Derby.
Legal Troubles and Exile
Gaucci's business activities were not without legal issues. After Perugia Calcio's bankruptcy in 2005, Italian authorities initiated an inquiry into his financial practices, implicating his sons, Alessandro and Riccardo. Consequently, Gaucci fled to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, where he remained in hiding for approximately four years.
Legacy
Despite the controversies, Luciano Gaucci's influence on both football and horse racing left a lasting legacy. His bold decisions and the dramatic flair he brought to the sports industry remain a part of his enduring persona.
