History

Lehman College was originally established in 1931 as the Bronx campus of Hunter College, part of the City University of New York (CUNY). Its creation was part of a larger initiative to expand higher education opportunities in the Bronx, a borough of New York City. The campus was initially known as the Bronx Campus of Hunter College.

During World War II, the campus was repurposed to serve as a training facility for the United States Army. This temporary change in use was part of the broader national effort to support the war. After the war, the campus returned to its educational mission and continued to operate under Hunter College.

In 1968, the campus was designated as an independent college within the CUNY system and was named after Herbert H. Lehman. Lehman was a prominent Democratic politician who served as the 45th Governor of New York and as a U.S. Senator. His contributions to public service and education were honored through the naming of the college.

Throughout the latter half of the 20th century and into the 21st century, Lehman College expanded both its physical campus and its academic programs. The college added new buildings to accommodate a growing student body and launched various undergraduate and graduate programs.

The Bedford Park Boulevard–Lehman College station on the IRT Jerome Avenue Line of the New York City Subway helped improve accessibility to the campus, facilitating its growth.
