Lake Worth Beach Florida
Lake Worth Beach is a vibrant city located in the east-central region of Palm Beach County, Florida. Known for its colorful historic cottages and dynamic arts scene, it lies approximately 63 miles north of Miami and just south of West Palm Beach.
The history of Lake Worth Beach is rooted in the late 19th century when formerly enslaved African-American pioneers, Samuel and Fannie James, affectionately known as the "Black Diamonds," established a settlement named "Jewell" in 1889. This area later developed into what is now known as Lake Worth Beach. The city's name was changed from Lake Worth to Lake Worth Beach in 2019 to emphasize its coastal location.
Lake Worth Beach is bordered by the picturesque Lake Worth Lagoon, a lagoon running parallel to the coast, separated from the Atlantic Ocean by barrier islands. This lagoon is an essential part of the local environment and provides opportunities for various recreational activities.
Lake Worth Beach is renowned for its unique architectural heritage, boasting over 1,000 colorful historic cottages dating back to the early 20th century. These cottages, primarily of Frame Vernacular, Craftsman, or Bungalow style, are the largest concentration in the state of Florida, surpassing even Key West. Most cottages were constructed in the 1920s on narrow 25-foot lots, contributing to the city's charming and distinctive character.
The city hosts one of the country's largest street-painting festivals, attracting artists and visitors alike. The vibrant arts scene extends to various venues, including the Lake Worth Playhouse, which offers a variety of mainstream and alternative programming.
Notably, Lake Worth Beach is home to The Dancing Elephant, an offbeat indie bookstore with deep roots in the community. Formerly known as the Rainbow Bridge, the bookstore was founded by a Hungarian metaphysicist in 1972 and revitalized in 2022.
Among the city's historical landmarks is the Gulf Stream Hotel, located on 1 Lake Avenue, a significant piece of local history added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The Historic Old Town Commercial District also forms an essential part of the city's heritage, designated as a U.S. historic district in 2001.
Lake Worth Beach's educational landscape includes Palm Beach State College, a public college providing higher education opportunities within the Florida College System. Another key institution is the Lake Worth Community High School, established in 1922, which continues to serve the local community.
