Launch
The official launch of the Kochi Metro took place on June 17, 2017, and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The first phase of the metro covered a distance of 13.4 kilometers from Aluva to Palarivattom, featuring 11 stations.
The launch event was marked by the presence of notable dignitaries, including E. Sreedharan, known as the "Metro Man" of India, who played a pivotal role as the principal advisor during the conception and execution stages. The launch of the metro was celebrated as a historic moment for Kochi, representing not only an upgrade in transport facilities but also an economic stimulus that would drive growth and development in the region.
Moreover, Kochi Metro's launch was notable for its emphasis on inclusivity and innovation. It was among the first metros in India to employ a significant number of women and members of the transgender community, setting a precedent for social inclusion. Additionally, it was the first metro in India to employ vertical gardens on its piers, further promoting environmental sustainability.
