Kharagpur Morgram Expressway
The Kharagpur–Morgram Expressway is a significant infrastructure project in the state of West Bengal in India. Officially designated as National Highway 116A, this expressway is currently under construction and forms the southern segment of the larger Kharagpur–Siliguri Economic Corridor.
The expressway spans approximately 231 kilometers, connecting the towns of Kharagpur and Morgram. It is designed as a four-lane, access-controlled greenfield expressway. This infrastructure is part of India's ambitious Bharatmala Pariyojana initiative, which aims to enhance road connectivity and reduce logistics costs across the country.
Starting near Kharagpur, the expressway links to National Highway 16 and extends to Morgram, intersecting with National Highway 34 and National Highway 60. Key areas along this route include:
The expressway significantly reduces the travel distance by approximately 100 kilometers compared to existing routes, enhancing the transportation network in West Bengal.
The Kharagpur–Morgram Expressway is poised to boost economic activity by improving the efficiency of freight and passenger travel. The expressway is expected to cut down freight travel time from approximately 9–10 hours to just 3–5 hours, thus facilitating quicker movement of goods and services.
The development of this expressway is also expected to spur regional economic growth by improving connectivity with Northeast India and other parts of the country, such as Siliguri. This infrastructure advancement is crucial for the import and export sectors, connecting major economic hubs and fostering trade links.
The expressway is part of a broader strategy to develop the Kharagpur–Siliguri Economic Corridor, which enhances road connectivity from the southern parts of West Bengal to its northern tip and further into Northeast India. This strategic corridor is expected to play a crucial role in improving the overall infrastructure and economic outlook of the region.
