Kerala Police
The Kerala Police is the law enforcement agency responsible for maintaining law and order within the Indian state of Kerala. With its headquarters located in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, the agency is renowned for its motto, "Mridhu Bhave Dhrida Kruthye," which translates to "Soft in Temperament, Firm in Action" in Sanskrit.
The Kerala Police has a rich historical background, with its origins tracing back to various policing systems instituted during colonial times. The evolution of this police force reflects the dynamic socio-political changes in the region, resulting in a modern, efficient law enforcement body known for its dedication to public service.
The Kerala Police is structured into various specialized units to address different aspects of law enforcement and public safety:
The Special Operations Group (SOG) is an elite unit within the Kerala Police, designed to counter left-wing extremism. Focusing primarily on Maoist activities, the SOG operates in districts historically affected by such extremism, including Wayanad, Malappuram, and Palakkad. This unit functions under the direct command of the State Police Chief and is headed by a Superintendent of Police.
Training for the Kerala Police is conducted at the Police Training College (PTC) and the Kerala Police Academy, where recruits undergo comprehensive training programs. The curriculum includes traditional policing skills, modern investigative techniques, and specialized courses to address emerging challenges such as cyber-crime and pandemic policing.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kerala Police innovatively adapted their training programs to ensure continued preparedness and public safety.
A unique feature of the Kerala Police is the Tourism Police, which aims to assist tourists and promote safety in touristic areas. The International Tourism Police Station and Police Museum in Ernakulam is the first of its kind in the country, showcasing both the history of the Kerala Police and providing a dedicated service to tourists.
