Johan Rockstrom
Johan Rockström is a prominent Swedish scientist known for his significant contributions to sustainability science and climate change research. Born in 1965, he has played a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of the Earth System and the planetary boundaries framework.
Johan Rockström currently serves as the director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. His work primarily focuses on the resilience of the Earth's ecosystems and how human actions are impacting planetary systems. Rockström is widely recognized for co-developing the concept of planetary boundaries, alongside Will Steffen and other leading scientists, which identifies nine crucial thresholds within the Earth System that must not be transgressed to maintain a stable planet.
The planetary boundaries framework, introduced in 2009, outlines thresholds in areas such as climate change, biodiversity loss, ocean acidification, and others. Crossing these boundaries could lead to potentially irreversible environmental changes. This framework has been influential in shaping global environmental policy and has raised awareness about the need for sustainable management of Earth's resources.
Rockström has been instrumental in communicating the urgency of planetary sustainability to a broader audience. He co-presented the documentary, Breaking Boundaries: The Science Behind our Planet, with the renowned natural historian David Attenborough. This film highlights how human activities are pushing the Earth beyond its limits and the implications for future generations.
In addition to his role at the Potsdam Institute, Rockström is affiliated with the Stockholm Resilience Centre, where he previously served as executive director. His work has earned him numerous accolades, including the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement, which is often regarded as the Nobel Prize for environmental science.
