The road's origins can be traced back to its function as a primary route from downtown Kuala Lumpur to the state of Pahang, which it is named after. Over the years, it has been integrated as part of Federal Route 2, a significant highway network in Malaysia. In the 1980s, Jalan Pahang underwent a major redevelopment, transitioning from a single carriageway to a dual carriageway to accommodate increasing traffic demands.

Jalan Pahang is not merely a commuting route; it is enveloped by various urban and residential areas, including Titiwangsa, Sentul, Setapak, and Wangsa Maju.
