Iskandar Malaysia Development Corridor

Iskandar Malaysia (formerly known as the Iskandar Development Region and South Johor Economic Region) is the primary southern development corridor in Johor, Malaysia. Officially established on 8 November 2006, it represents the largest special economic zone in Malaysia by investment, aiming to transform the region into a dynamic metropolis of international standing.

Historical Background

The concept of Iskandar Malaysia emerged from a 2005 feasibility study conducted by Khazanah Nasional, the sovereign wealth fund of the Malaysian government. This study concluded that the creation of such a corridor would yield considerable economic, social, and developmental benefits. In response, the National SJER Planning Committee appointed Khazanah Nasional to devise a sustainable and holistic development strategy for the region.

The formal blueprint for Iskandar Malaysia, known as the Comprehensive Development Plan, was unveiled in November 2006 by the then-Prime Minister of Malaysia, the Chief Minister of Johor, Abdul Ghani Othman, and representatives from Khazanah Nasional.

In 2007, the Malaysia-Singapore Joint Ministerial Committee for Iskandar Malaysia was established.
