Interstate 94 (I-94) is a major east–west Interstate Highway in the United States, connecting the Great Lakes and northern Great Plains regions. This vital artery of transportation begins at its western terminus just east of Billings, Montana and extends to its eastern terminus in Port Huron, Michigan. Here, it crosses the Blue Water Bridge into Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, where it transitions into Ontario Highway 402.
Route Description
Western Terminus
I-94 begins at a junction with Interstate 90 near Billings, Montana. It plays a crucial role as the primary overland route connecting Seattle, Washington via I-90 to Toronto, Ontario through Ontario Highway 401. This makes I-94 the only east–west Interstate Highway to offer a direct connection to Canada.
Midwestern Path
Traveling eastward, I-94 passes through North Dakota and enters Moorhead, Minnesota by crossing the Red River. The highway follows a northwest–southeast trajectory through Fergus Falls, Minnesota, Alexandria, Minnesota, and Saint Cloud, Minnesota.
Twin Cities and Beyond
In the Twin Cities area, I-94 was temporarily expanded between northbound I-35W and Minnesota State Highway 280 due to the I-35W Mississippi River bridge collapse. This expansion was a critical measure to alleviate traffic congestion.
Midwestern Metropolis
North of Chicago, Illinois, the highway has been widened from six to eight lanes between Illinois Route 22 and the Wisconsin state line. I-94 intersects with I-90 at several points, including Tomah, Wisconsin to Madison, Wisconsin, in Chicago, and Lake Station, Indiana.
Eastern Terminus
The eastern terminus at Port Huron, Michigan, is significant for its international connection, making I-94 integral for trade and transportation between the U.S. and Canada.
Historical Background
The first segment of I-94 funded under the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 was completed in 1958. This 12-mile section bridged Jamestown, North Dakota and Valley City, North Dakota, setting the stage for the expansive highway network that followed.
Construction and Infrastructure Projects
In Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, ongoing construction aims to improve safety and reduce congestion. Such projects include temporary widening and future traffic stage preparations, reflecting the continuous efforts to maintain and enhance this vital transportation route.
