Route Description

Interstate 43 connects several important highways including Interstate 39 and Interstate 90 in Beloit with Milwaukee and extends northward to intersect with Interstate 41, U.S. Highway 41, and U.S. Highway 141 in Green Bay. In particular, I-43 overlaps with State Trunk Highway 32 in two distinct sections, and shares segments with other major routes including Interstate 94, Interstate 894, U.S. Highway 10, U.S. Highway 45, and Wisconsin Highway 57.

Historical Development

The origins of I-43 lie in two separate proposals for highways connecting Milwaukee to Beloit and Milwaukee to Janesville. The Milwaukee-Beloit route was selected, and the corridor was completed in 1976 under the designation of WIS 15. It was later renumbered as Interstate 43 in 1988, marking its official inclusion in the Interstate Highway System.

The development of I-43 has been influenced by several key legislative and planning initiatives in Wisconsin. The Accelerated Highway Improvement Law of 1966 was pivotal in advancing the completion of rural Interstate routes, with efforts bolstered by citizen groups and the state's Highway Advisory Committee.

Economic and Urban Impact
