Interstate 39
Interstate 39 (I-39) is a major north-south highway that serves as a critical transportation link in the Midwestern United States. Spanning across two states, Illinois and Wisconsin, I-39 facilitates regional connectivity and supports economic activities by linking key cities and intersecting with numerous other highways.
In Illinois, I-39 begins at an interchange with Interstate 55 near Normal, Illinois, a city known for its educational institutions and cultural resources. The Interstate then extends north, covering a distance of approximately 140.82 miles (226.63 km). As it traverses the state, I-39 intersects with several vital routes, including Interstate 80, which is a major transcontinental thoroughfare connecting the East Coast and West Coast.
In the city of Rockford, Illinois, I-39 merges with U.S. Route 20, before joining Interstate 90. The completion of I-39 in Illinois in 1992 marked the transition of the previous U.S. Route 51 into an Interstate-grade freeway.
Upon crossing into Wisconsin, I-39 continues for another 182 miles (293 km), further emphasizing its role as a major north-south corridor. From Rockford to Portage, Wisconsin, I-39 runs concurrently with I-90, and from Madison, Wisconsin to Portage, Interstate 94 joins the two, creating the longest three-way concurrency in the country at 29 miles (47 km).
The highway passes significant geographical and urban landmarks, including Lake Koshkonong and the city of Stoughton, Wisconsin, before reaching its northern terminus in Rothschild, Wisconsin, a village that marks the beginning of I-39's journey from the south.
I-39 plays an essential role in supporting local and regional economies by facilitating the movement of goods and people. Its strategic interchanges and linkages with other major routes, including I-80, I-90, and I-94, enhance its utility as a vital transportation artery.
The highway's development was part of a broader effort to modernize and expand the national Interstate Highway System, accommodating increasing traffic volumes and promoting regional growth. The Abraham Lincoln Memorial Bridge, which carries I-39 over the Illinois River, is one of the notable infrastructural achievements along the route.
Numerous attractions and points of interest are located along I-39. For instance, the Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Rockford, situated near the highway, offers recreational opportunities to travelers and residents alike. Additionally, cities like El Paso, Illinois and Fox Cities, Wisconsin are enriched by the access and connectivity provided by I-39.
