International School Ibadan
The International School Ibadan, located on the campus of University of Ibadan, is a renowned educational institution in Nigeria. Founded on October 13, 1963, by the German-British educator Kurt Hahn, the school was established with funding from the USAID, Ford Foundation, and land donated by the Nigerian government. The International School Ibadan (ISI) has been instrumental in shaping the educational landscape of Nigeria and continues to provide quality education that meets international standards.
Academic Curriculum
ISI is an authorized IB World School and follows the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) in its Pre-school and Junior School sections. This curriculum is designed to provide a broad, international education that prepares students to continue their studies anywhere in the world while promoting harmony and understanding among diverse cultures.
In addition to the IB PYP, ISI offers a curriculum that aligns with the Nigerian educational system, specifically the 6-3-3-4 structure introduced in the late 1980s. This system includes six years of secondary school education, during which students prepare for international exams such as the IGCSE 'O' Levels and Cambridge 'A' Level examinations.
Extracurricular Activities
ISI places a significant emphasis on extracurricular activities, providing students with a well-rounded educational experience. One of the school's notable events is the biannual international soiree, where various nationalities represented among the staff and students showcase their cultures through food, clothing, and other material aspects. This event serves as a fundraiser for the less-privileged, reflecting the school's commitment to community service. Another prominent activity is the Charity walk, which underscores the school's dedication to philanthropy.
Leadership
The leadership of ISI has evolved over the years, with several notable figures guiding the institution. The first indigenous head of the school was Rev. (Dr.) Dapo Ajayi, who served from 1986 to 1988. Subsequent leaders included Dapo Fajembola (1990–1991), the first female principal Esther Adetola Smith (1991–2004), and others such as R.O. Akintilebo (2006–2007), Dr. Mark Brai Malik (2007–2017), Phebean O. Olowe (2017–2022), and the current principal, Akintunde Yinka, since 2022.
