Historical Background

Indian Malaysians mainly reside in urban centers across Peninsular Malaysia, with significant populations in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang, and Johor. Penang, in particular, has a distinct community known as the Chulias, who have historically been involved in trade.

The Indian Malaysian community is diverse, composed of various sub-ethnic groups, languages, and religions. The majority are Tamils, but there are also Telugu, Malayalees, Punjabis, and others.
Religion plays a significant role in the community, with Hinduism being the predominant faith, followed by Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, and others. The Thaipusam festival, celebrated at the Batu Caves, is one of the most prominent Hindu festivals in Malaysia.
Language
While Bahasa Malaysia is the national language, Indian Malaysians often speak their mother tongues, including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Punjabi, among others. English is also widely used, particularly for business and education.

Indian Malaysians have been actively involved in the political scene of Malaysia. The Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) is a prominent political party representing the interests of the Indian community. Other political entities include the Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress and the Malaysian Indian People's Party.
