History

The origins of Illinois Wesleyan University trace back to 1850 when a group of 30 civic and religious leaders aspired to create "an Institution of learning of Collegiate grade." With the sponsorship of the United Methodist Church, the institution was initially named "Illinois University" and later became "Illinois Wesleyan University" to reflect the support of the church. The first president of the university was Clinton W. Sears, inaugurated in 1855. Since then, Illinois Wesleyan has had 21 presidents guiding its mission.

In a progressive move for the era, the Board of Trustees formally invited Black students to enroll in 1867, followed by female students in 1870. Hannah I. Shur became the first female graduate in 1872, and Gus A. Hill was the first African-American graduate, earning a law degree in 1880.
