Ikaria
Ikaria, also spelled Icaria, is a Greek island located in the Aegean Sea, approximately 10 nautical miles southwest of Samos. The island covers an area of 255.303 square kilometers, featuring 102 miles of coastline and a population of 8,312 as of 2021. Its principal town and main port is Agios Kirykos, followed by Evdilos, which serves as the secondary port on the north side of the island.
In antiquity, Ikaria was known as Icaria, named after the mythical Icarus, who is said to have fallen into the sea near the island. This legend is part of the larger tapestry of Greek mythology, potentially symbolizing the dangers of hubris. However, the island's name may have also been derived from the Phoenician word for fish ("ikor") or sheep ("kara"), indicating a rich abundance of natural resources.
Most of Ikaria's population resides along the coast, with its towns and larger villages nestled near the sea. The island's landscapes are characterized by rugged terrain, forested areas, and pristine beaches. Among its notable natural features is Nas, a village famous for its beach and the ruins of an ancient temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis.
Ikaria is part of the Blue Zones — regions of the world where people live significantly longer lives. This has been partly attributed to their diet and lifestyle, which were the subject of the Ikaria Study conducted by the University of Athens School of Medicine. The island's cultural tapestry includes traditional music like Ikariotikos, a dance and song integral to Ikarian identity.
The island of Ikaria is also home to Therma, a spa town renowned for its therapeutic, saline hot springs. The modern infrastructure includes facilities such as the Ikaria Island National Airport, which plays a crucial role in connecting the island with mainland Greece and other regions.
Ikaria has been home to several notable figures, including Ioannis Malachias, a Greek doctor and leader of the Ikarian movement, and Diane Kochilas, a renowned chef and author who operates the Glorious Greek Kitchen Cooking School on the island.
