Iec 62196
The IEC 62196 standard is a series of international guidelines that define the specifications for plugs, socket-outlets, vehicle connectors, and vehicle inlets used in the conductive charging of electric vehicles. This standard plays a crucial role in the electric vehicle (EV) industry as it ensures compatibility and safety across charging systems worldwide.
Established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), IEC 62196 outlines the design and performance requirements for connectors used in various charging scenarios. It is closely related to the IEC 61851 series, which defines the charging modes and the interface between the EV and the charging station.
Type 2 Connectors: Commonly found in the Western market, particularly in Europe, the IEC 62196-2 Type 2 connector is often referred to (incorrectly in the USA) as the Mennekes connector, named after the German company involved in its development. It supports both single-phase and three-phase AC charging.
Type 1 Connectors: Known in North America as the SAE J1772 or J plug, the Type 1 connector under IEC 62196 is used primarily for AC charging.
Type 3 Connectors: Often associated with the company Scame, Type 3 connectors are designed for electric vehicle charging, mainly used in certain regions for specific applications.
Combined Charging System (CCS): The Combined Charging System integrates AC and DC charging capabilities. CCS1 or Combo 1 is an extension of the IEC 62196 Type 1, while CCS2 or Combo 2 extends the Type 2 connector specifications.
The IEC 62196 standard works in conjunction with various charging modes outlined in IEC 61851:
The IEC 60309 standard is also relevant as it covers industrial and multiphase power plugs and sockets. Together with IEC 62196, these standards ensure a comprehensive approach to the safe and efficient charging of electric vehicles.
The compatibility and interoperability provided by IEC 62196 make it a foundational element in the development and deployment of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. Its guidelines help manufacturers and service providers offer reliable and efficient solutions to consumers.
