Iberian System
The Iberian System is a significant system of mountain ranges located predominantly in Spain, stretching in a vast and complex manner across the central region of the Iberian Peninsula. This system is characterized by its largely high and rugged mountain chains and massifs. Despite its central location, the system extends towards the Mediterranean coast in the Valencian Community to the east.
The Iberian System plays a crucial role in the hydrographic division of the region. It serves as a natural barrier separating the watersheds of most of the major rivers in Spain and Portugal. Notably, it divides the Ebro basin to the east from the basins of the Douro, Tagus, Guadiana, Júcar, and Turia to the west and south. This makes the system a critical component of the Iberian Peninsula's topography and hydrology.
The geology of the Iberian System is notably complex. Unlike more homogenous systems, the Iberian System is composed of a diverse collection of mountain ranges, massifs, plateaus, and depressions. This variation results in a lack of a consistent petrologic composition and overall structural uniformity. This geological diversity adds to both the beauty and complexity of the region.
Since ancient times, the Iberian System has been one of the chief mining regions in Spain. Important mining areas are found in ranges such as Sierra Menera, Sierra de Arcos, and Sierra de San Just. These regions have historically been key to the local economy, providing resources and employment. For instance, one of the comarcas of Aragon located in the Iberian System is named Cuencas Mineras, translating to "Mining Basins," highlighting the area's economic focus.
The Iberian System is not only important for its physical and economic attributes but also holds cultural and historical significance. The system predates Roman times, with indigenous peoples such as the Iberians having settled along its regions. The Iberian language and scripts developed by these ancient peoples were prevalent across the system, adding layers to its rich historical narrative.
