Hudson Bergen Light Rail
The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail (HBLR) is a light rail system located in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. It is owned by New Jersey Transit and serves as a vital public transportation link in the densely populated urban areas along the western shore of the Hudson River, connecting various communities from Bayonne to North Bergen.
The HBLR was conceived as part of New Jersey's Smart Growth policy to improve public transit and reduce traffic congestion in urban areas. The light rail system was developed under a design-build-operate-maintain agreement with 21st Century Rail Corporation, which delivered a fleet of vehicles and was responsible for the system's operation and maintenance for an agreed period. Originally, the contract covered 15 years of operation, but it was subsequently extended to 20 years.
The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail primarily uses a combination of old rail lines and new exclusive rights-of-way for much of its length. It features some grade separation in certain areas, though it shares a lane with automobiles on a portion of Essex Street in downtown Jersey City. Generally, the light rail operates independently of other traffic, providing efficient and reliable service to its passengers.
The HBLR comprises three lines with a total of 24 stations. Notable stations include:
The system extends from Port Imperial in Weehawken to Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen. The line from Port Imperial to Tonnelle Avenue was inaugurated in 2006, expanding the reach of the light rail and improving connectivity for local residents.
Original plans envisioned extending the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail further north to the Vince Lombardi Park & Ride in Ridgefield and south to 5th Street in Bayonne. There were also plans to extend westward to Droyer's Point in Jersey City, although these extensions have not yet been realized.
The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail has been a significant development in public transportation for New Jersey, providing a sustainable and efficient transit alternative to the congested roadways of the Hudson County region. It has helped stimulate economic development and urban revitalization along its route, making it an essential part of the area's transit infrastructure.
