The Palais Rohan serves as the Hôtel de Ville or City Hall of Bordeaux, a significant city in southwestern France. This majestic building, constructed in the 18th century, originally served as the Archbishop's Palace, reflecting the rich history and architectural heritage of the region.
Historical Background
In 1771, Ferdinand Maximilien Mériadec de Rohan, the new Archbishop of Bordeaux, commissioned the construction of a new building to replace the old medieval archbishop's residence. The original palace was located near the Bordeaux Cathedral, and the new building was designed as a grand hôtel particulier, featuring a grand portal, a spacious courtyard, and two ornate façades.
Architectural Evolution
The Palais Rohan has undergone several transformations since its original construction. In the late 1870s, two new wings were added to house the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, designed by the architect Charles Burguet. This period was characterized by architectural styles prevalent during the Third French Republic.
Significant changes also occurred post-World War II, specifically during the Vichy Regime. After the resignation of Mayor Adrien Marquet, who served as a minister under the regime, Robert Poplawski welcomed the committee of liberation to the building on August 29, 1944, marking a pivotal moment during the liberation of Bordeaux.
