Carrie Furnaces: Located in Homestead, Pennsylvania, the Carrie Furnaces served the U.S. steel industry until their decommissioning in 1978. As some of the only pre-World War II 20th-century blast furnaces to survive, they were designated a National Historic Landmark in 2006.
Sloss Furnaces: Operating in Birmingham, Alabama from 1882 to 1971, the Sloss Furnaces are another example of significant industrial heritage. They are preserved as a National Historic Landmark, highlighting both the industrial and socioeconomic impact of iron production in the American South.
Hopewell Furnace: The Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site in Pennsylvania shows the transition from charcoal-fueled furnaces to anthracite-fueled mills, reflecting changes in energy resources and industrial processes.
Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord: In Germany, the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord incorporates former industrial smelting equipment and serves as a public park, representing the adaptive reuse of former industrial sites.
The preservation of historic blast furnaces has gained momentum as part of the broader movement to recognize industrial heritage. Once viewed purely as functional industrial installations, these structures are now appreciated for their historical and cultural importance.
