Hinduism in Pakistan represents a significant religious minority, being the second-largest religion after Islam. According to the 2023 Pakistani census, Hindus constitute approximately 2.17% of the population, translating to over 5.2 million people. The Hindu community in Pakistan is primarily concentrated in the Sindh province, with significant populations also found in Balochistan, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Historical Context

Hinduism once held a dominant position in the region, particularly prior to the Muslim period in South Asia. However, post the 1947 Partition of India and subsequent migrations, the Hindu demographic underwent significant changes. This demographic shift was further influenced by events such as the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.

Demographics and Distribution

The largest concentration of Hindus is found in the eastern regions of Sindh. The Umerkot District stands out with the highest percentage of Hindu residents at 54.7%. In terms of absolute numbers, Tharparkar District houses approximately 810,000 Hindus, making it the district with the most Hindus in Pakistan. Smaller Hindu communities are also present in Balochistan, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Religious Practices and Diversity

The Hindu community in Pakistan is diverse, with various practices and traditions. A growing number of urban Hindu youth are associating with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), which reflects a modern engagement with Hindu spiritual practices. Additionally, some communities in rural Sindh worship a multitude of "Mother Goddesses" as clan or family patrons.

The Nanakpanth represents another branch within the Hindu community, following the teachings of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs. This intermingling of religious beliefs often blurs the classical distinctions between Hinduism, Sikhism, and Islam.
