Hellabrunn Zoo, known as Tierpark Hellabrunn in German, is a renowned zoological garden located in the Bavarian capital of Munich. Spanning over 40 hectares (99 acres), it is recognized as the first Geo-zoo, where animals are grouped according to their geographical distribution.
History
Established in 1911, Hellabrunn Zoo has a rich history intertwined with significant developments in the field of zoology. One of its most notable directors was Heinz Heck, a prominent German biologist who played a crucial role in the zoo's development. Heinz Heck is particularly famous for initiating a selective breeding program in the early 1920s aimed at "breeding back" the extinct Aurochs using several modern cattle breeds. This program was part of a broader effort known as Heck cattle.
Unique Attractions
Hellabrunn Zoo is home to a diverse collection of species and has been the site of several significant zoological achievements. For instance, in 1943, the zoo witnessed the birth of a second-generation hybrid animal, a Panthera hybrid, specifically a liger mothered cub, showcasing the zoo's role in experimental breeding.
The zoo is also notable for its efforts in preserving and showcasing rare species, such as the Heck horse, bred by Heinz Heck and his brother Lutz Heck, director of the Berlin Zoo. These horses are an attempt to bring back the extinct Tarpan.
