Hall of Fame Open
The Hall of Fame Open is an internationally recognized tennis tournament that has been held annually in July since 1976. It takes place at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, which is the original location of the U.S. National Championships, now known as the US Open.
Venue and Surface
This prestigious event is conducted on outdoor grass courts, a surface cherished by many players for its unique playing characteristics. The Hall of Fame Open is notable for its historical association with the Grand Prix tennis circuit between 1976 and 1989.
Structure and Format
The tournament features a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles setup. A unique aspect of this tournament was its association with the so-called "Casino Curse." Up until 2011, when John Isner clinched victory, no top seed had ever won the tournament, a phenomenon attributed to the location of the Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino.
Evolution and Sponsorship
From 2023 to 2025, the event was branded as the Infosys Hall of Fame Open due to sponsorship agreements. In 2025, the tournament underwent significant changes. It was downgraded to a Challenger 125 series event but simultaneously expanded to include a women's WTA 125 series event, making it a combined tournament format. The scheduling was adjusted to coincide with the second week of Wimbledon, aimed at attracting players who were eliminated early in that prestigious event.
Induction Ceremony
Traditionally, the International Tennis Hall of Fame induction ceremony was aligned with the tournament. However, this ceremony was rescheduled to August, separating it from the tournament timeframe to accommodate the new scheduling changes.
Cultural and Historical Significance
The Hall of Fame Open not only represents a key fixture in the annual tennis calendar but also serves as a historic reminder of the sport's rich legacy in the United States. The event contributes to the cultural and athletic heritage of Newport, Rhode Island, and provides a platform for emerging tennis talents to showcase their skills on an international stage.
