Newport Casino

The Newport Casino is a historic athletic complex and recreation center located at 180–200 Bellevue Avenue, in the Bellevue Avenue Historic District, Newport, Rhode Island. Built between 1879 and 1881, the casino is a prime example of the Shingle Style architecture designed by the then-new architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White. The project was commissioned by James Gordon Bennett, Jr., a prominent figure and publisher of the New York Herald.

Architectural Significance

The Newport Casino was constructed as a social club during the Gilded Age, a time characterized by rapid economic growth and extravagant lifestyle among America's elite. The building’s architectural design is noted for its shingle-clad surfaces, asymmetrical shapes, and complex rooflines—all hallmarks of the Shingle Style. This architectural style was particularly popular for resort buildings and private residences during the late 19th century.

Originally conceived to be a center of social life in Newport, the Newport Casino was designed to include a variety of recreational and social facilities. These included courts for lawn tennis and court tennis, rooms for billiards, card games, and reading, as well as spaces for squash and lawn bowling. The first US Open (tennis) tournament was held on its grass courts in 1881, marking the beginning of what would become a storied tradition in tennis.
