The Halkomelem language is a member of the Salishan language family, predominantly spoken by the Coast Salish peoples in the southwestern part of British Columbia, Canada. It is divided into three regional dialects: Upriver (Halq̓eméylem), Island (Hul̓q̓umín̓um̓), and Downriver (hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓).
Dialects
Upriver Halkomelem
The Upriver dialect, known as Halq̓eméylem, is spoken by the Stó:lō Nation along the upper reaches of the Fraser River. It is one of the more endangered dialects but efforts are underway to revitalize it through educational programs and cultural initiatives.
Island Halkomelem
Hul̓q̓umín̓um̓, the Island dialect, is spoken on Vancouver Island and the adjacent mainland. This dialect is actively taught in local schools and communities, aiming to preserve its usage among the younger generations.
Downriver Halkomelem
The Downriver dialect, hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓, is spoken by the Musqueam First Nation and other communities near the mouth of the Fraser River. It is the most robust of the three dialects, with ongoing revitalization efforts supported by community resources and digital media.
Linguistic Features
Halkomelem features distinctive phonetic characteristics, including voiceless dental and alveolar lateral fricatives. The language is polysynthetic, meaning it has a high degree of morphological complexity allowing for the creation of long words expressing complex ideas.

The vocabulary of Halkomelem includes terms deeply tied to the natural environment and traditional practices of the Coast Salish peoples. For instance, the word for sockeye salmon is "sθə́qəy̓", reflecting the cultural significance of this species to the local communities.
