Gujarat Hybrid Renewable Energy Park
The Gujarat Hybrid Renewable Energy Park, known as the Khavda Solar Park, is a pioneering renewable energy initiative located near Vighakot village in the Kutch district of Gujarat, India. This ambitious project is set to become one of the largest renewable energy parks in the world, emphasizing the combined use of solar power and wind power technologies.
The proposal for the park was approved by the Government of Gujarat on September 9, 2020. The project allocates 60,000 hectares (600 square kilometers) of land and has a planned capacity of 41.5 gigawatts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the project on December 15, 2020. This initiative is part of India's broader commitment to increasing its renewable energy capacity, which includes nearly 70 solar parks across the country.
The Ministry of Power of India plans to invest ₹18,598 crore (approximately US$2.2 billion) in infrastructure to transmit 7 gigawatts of power from the park. The park is strategically located near the International Border in the Kutch district, taking advantage of the expansive, arid landscape to maximize solar and wind energy production.
The Gujarat Hybrid Renewable Energy Park is a significant component of India's renewable energy strategy, contributing to the country's status as a leader in renewable energy. As of 2025, over half of India's energy capacity comes from renewable sources. This initiative is part of Gujarat's plan to develop a 30-gigawatt renewable energy park under the government’s waste land policy.
The project is aligned with the initiatives of major renewable energy companies like Adani Green Energy, which are pivotal in India's transition towards sustainable energy solutions. The park's development underscores the importance of hybrid energy projects, which integrate multiple renewable sources to optimize energy production.
