Guadalupe Nuevo Leon
Guadalupe is a city and surrounding municipality located in the state of Nuevo León, situated in the northeastern region of Mexico. It forms part of the Greater Monterrey metropolitan area, which is one of the largest urban centers in Mexico. The city boasts a rich history and is a significant cultural and economic hub within the state.
The origins of Guadalupe date back to the colonial era. In 1756, it was originally named the "Pueblo de la Nueva Tlaxcala de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de Horcasitas." This name reflects its historical ties to both the Tlaxcalan people and Spanish colonial influence. On March 5, 1825, it was officially declared a municipality of Nuevo León and categorized as a "villa," though it continued to be referred to as the "Villa de Guadalupe" for many years.
Guadalupe is known for its vibrant cultural life, highlighted by events such as the Guadalupe Expo. This annual Regional Livestock Exhibition features a showcase of cattle and sheep, mechanical games, restaurants offering Mexican cuisine, and concerts held at the famous "El Domo Care."
The city is also home to Eloy Cavazos, a celebrated Mexican matador, who debuted in Plaza Mexico and gained substantial fame.
One of the most notable structures in Guadalupe is the Estadio BBVA, also known as "El Gigante de Acero" (The Steel Giant). This stadium is an association football venue, and it plays a crucial role in the sports culture of the region. It has been slated to host significant events, such as matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Guadalupe City Museum is another important cultural landmark, dedicated to chronicling the history, geographical features, and original settlers of the municipality.
Guadalupe contributes to the regional economy through various industries, including commerce and manufacturing. The city is notably the birthplace of Oxxo, a renowned convenience store chain owned by FEMSA. Established in 1976, Oxxo has since expanded throughout Mexico and beyond.
