Group Captain
Group captain (Gp Capt or G/C) is a senior officer rank used in the air forces of several countries that were historically influenced by the United Kingdom. This rank originated in the Royal Air Force (RAF) and is equivalent to the rank of colonel in the army and navy captain in the naval services.
Historical Context
The RAF was established on 1 April 1918. During its formation, the RAF adopted officer rank titles from the British Army. Consequently, former Royal Naval Air Service captains and Royal Flying Corps colonels became colonels in the RAF. At one point, it was suggested that RAF ranks should reflect Royal Navy officer ranks with the prefix "air." For example, the rank that eventually became group captain was initially proposed as "air captain."
