Gipuzkoa is a province in Spain, part of the Basque Country, and is located in the northern part of the country. It is the smallest of Spain's provinces in terms of area, covering only 1,980 square kilometers (760 square miles). Despite its small size, it is densely populated, with approximately 720,592 inhabitants recorded in 2018, over half of whom reside in the San Sebastian metropolitan area.
Etymology and History
The earliest recorded name of the province is "Ipuscoa," appearing in a document from the year 1025. Over the years, several variations of the name have been used, including Ipuzcoa, Ipuçcha, and Ipuzka. The exact origins of the name remain unclear, though it is suggested that it may be linked to the Basque word "Giputz," which incorporates the root "ip-" found in other Basque words such as "ipar" (north), "ipurdi" (back), and "ipuin" (tale).
Officially, the name Gipuzkoa is used in the Basque version of the Spanish constitution and the Statute of Autonomy of the Basque Country. The Juntas Generales of the province recognize this as the only official spelling for the historical territory.
Geography
The province is situated along the northern coast of Spain, bordered by the Bay of Biscay to the north. It shares borders with the Basque provinces of Bizkaia to the west, Álava to the south, and Navarre to the east. The Pyrenees form the eastern frontier with France.
