Georgia Aquarium

The Georgia Aquarium is a renowned public aquarium located in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Since its opening in 2005, the aquarium has become one of the largest and most diverse aquatic habitats in the world, featuring a vast array of marine species and exhibits. It held the title of the largest aquarium globally until it was surpassed in 2012 by the S.E.A. Aquarium in Singapore.

History

The vision for the Georgia Aquarium was conceived by Bernard Marcus, co-founder of The Home Depot, who pledged a significant donation of $250 million to the project. This initiative was rooted in his desire to enhance education and stimulate economic growth in Atlanta. The aquarium was developed following extensive research, with Marcus visiting 56 aquariums across 13 countries alongside his wife, Billi Marcus.

Structure and Exhibits

The Georgia Aquarium boasts seven major galleries, each designed to create environments that replicate the natural habitats of its diverse inhabitants. These exhibits collectively house thousands of animals across more than 11 million US gallons (42,000 m³) of water. The aquarium's design and expansive water volumes allow for an immersive and authentic representation of aquatic ecosystems.

Notable Species

Among the diverse marine life are species such as manta rays, whale sharks, and beluga whales. The Georgia Aquarium is one of the few places in the world where visitors can observe whale sharks in captivity—these are housed in the largest single aquarium habitat, known as the Ocean Voyager. The facility also supports a variety of fish, mammals, and invertebrates native to both marine and freshwater environments.

Conservation Efforts and Education

The Georgia Aquarium is not only a tourist attraction but also a center for conservation and education. It conducts numerous research and conservation initiatives aimed at preserving marine biodiversity. Its educational programs are designed to inspire and educate visitors about the importance of aquatic life and habitats. Media and Partnerships

The aquarium gained additional visibility through a partnership with the streaming service Discovery+. After its two-season show ended, the Georgia Aquarium began producing more content focused on animal experiences and conservation, further enhancing its educational outreach and engagement with the public.
