Gentle Monster
Gentle Monster is a South Korean luxury brand specializing in sunglasses and eyeglasses, founded in 2011. The brand has rapidly gained prominence for its innovative designs and unique marketing strategies, becoming a staple in the high-fashion eyewear industry.
The brand was established by Hankook Kim and is owned by II Combined, which also manages other ventures such as Tamburins, a fragrance brand, and NUDAKE, a dessert brand. The initial investment from serial entrepreneur Jae Wook Oh in 2012 helped Gentle Monster scale its operations. The company began producing frames in Daegu, a city in South Korea, and China. This strategic move was due to the restrictions on manufacturing acetate frames domestically within South Korea.
Gentle Monster is renowned for its high-profile collaborations. In 2024, the brand partnered with French luxury fashion house Maison Margiela to create the "2024 Maison Margiela x Gentle Monster" collection, blending avant-garde aesthetics with sophisticated eyewear designs. These collaborations have further cemented Gentle Monster's status as an innovator in the fashion industry.
The brand has also teamed up with various celebrities to broaden its appeal. Jennie Kim, a member of the popular K-pop group Blackpink, collaborated with Gentle Monster on the "Jentle Garden" and "Jentle Salon" collections, infusing a youthful and trendy vibe. Furthermore, Cai Xukun, a well-known Chinese artist, featured in the "GENTLE MONSTER ✕ KUN Campaign," highlighting the brand's cross-cultural engagement.
Beyond eyewear, Gentle Monster has ventured into artistic projects. Léa Seydoux is set to star in a film titled "Gentle Monster," directed by Marie Kreutzer, showcasing the brand's influence reaching into the cinematic world.
Gentle Monster's retail outlets are as much about the experience as they are about the product. The brand is known for its artistic and innovative store designs, often described as immersive art galleries. Notably, a dollhouse-themed pop-up store was opened in the Gangnam District of Seoul in collaboration with Jennie Kim, which drew significant attention for its creativity and interactive elements.
The brand has also embraced technology to enhance its offerings. In collaboration with Huawei, Gentle Monster has ventured into wearable tech with their smart eyewear collections like the "Gentle Monster Eyewear II," integrating style with technological functionality.
